Why Is My Heater Broken?
When you turn on the heat, the general expectation is that the heating system will begin to produce heat within several minutes. But when it doesn’t, there may be a number of causes for system malfunction, several of which relate to the type of heating system itself. Rarely, however, do any of these reasons require replacement of the full heating system.
Boiler
Many boilers rely on gas fuel, whether natural or propane gas, to heat water. The heated water then produces radiant heat to warm the home through a series of ducts and pipes. Common reasons you may think the boiler is broken include: electrical shorts and other wiring issues; pump failure; and low water pressure.
Heat Pump
Heat pumps have a reputation as a reliable and energy-efficient heat source. However, if the unit doesn’t turn on, short cycles, or freezes up, don’t worry. Heat pump issues generally relate to:
- A defective reversing valve;
- A dirty heat pump unit;
- Faulty thermostat;
- Insufficient refrigerant levels; and
- Leaky ductwork.
Electric & Gas Furnace
Obviously, if a forced air furnace is blowing cold air or isn’t blowing air at all, there’s an issue in the unit. A wide range of furnace issues may be caused by these four common issues:
- Clogged air filter;
- Dirty components;
- Leaky ductwork;
- Lack of fuel; and
- Pilot light issues.
